Charles Wheatstone
Charles Wheatstone (Gloucester, Reino Unido, 1802-París, 1875), físico británico. Tras ocuparse inicialmente en la construcción de instrumentos musicales, dedicó su energía al servicio de la investigación en los campos de la acústica, la óptica y la electricidad, obteniendo en 1834 la cátedra de física experimental del Kings College de Londres. Inventor de ingeniosos aparatos, como el caleidófono y el estereoscopio (1833), ha unido sobre todo su nombre a las aportaciones realizadas en el campo de la telegrafía eléctrica, con la puesta a punto (1837) del primer telégrafo eléctrico de aguja de utilidad práctica, así como del primer aparato de recepciones y transmisiones automáticas. Wheatstone aportó además numerosas contribuciones al desarrollo de la dinamo e ideó y difundió el uso de un dispositivo eléctrico en puente (denominado «de Wheatstone» en su honor) para la medición de resistencias eléctricas.
